"The Christian Endeavour
Movement was started in Williston, USA in 1881 by Rev. F.E. Clark,
who desired to hold a weekly devotional meeting in his church.
The movement quickly spread throughout America,
and soon it reached England where the first society was started
in Crewe (Cheshire) in 1887.
The Lancashire and Cheshire Federation of Christian
Endeavour Unions was formed in 1902 and soon afterwards, Mrs Wareing,
the Rochdale representative, suggested that it would be a good
thing if a house could be rented, where young Christian men and
women could spend a holiday in Christian surroundings.
With this in view the Committee rented a school
for the Summer Holiday at Kents Bank. The centre proved
very popular and later, when the school come on the market for
sale, it was purchased after much struggling and saving by those
interested.
The popularity of Kents Bank increased and it
became necessary to look further afield for fresh accommodation
- other homes being opened along the North Wales coast.
In 1924 Plas-y-Nant was added to the number of
Holiday Homes run by the Lancashire and Cheshire Federation.
The Building we know as the Rec (now "the
Old Chapel") was a private church and on "
de-consecration"
the ornaments were presented to the church at Beddgelert where
they still remain.
The number of homes has increased and there are
now ten in different parts of the British Isles. |
