When, last year, our friend Stanley produced a really excellent
Excursion Leaders Guide, I fully expected him to regard it in the
nature of a sort of life-work.
I pictured him, in years to come, gathering his grandchildren round
his knee, thoughtfully stroking his greying beard and remarking
(with that becoming modesty which is so strong a characteristic
of his) "Yes, when I was a young man I turned out a rather
decent Leaders Guide, the tattered remains of which may still be
seen in Betws Garmon Museum"
But I was wrong. Our Stanley is a restless type. He
cannot let well alone. And so, through the long winter months
he has toiled unceasingly in his lonely garret, by the light of
a fitful candle (doubtless swiped from they store room at Plas)
to produce an even better and brighter volume
Quite seriously, this latest edition is a really worthy effort
and reveals an "infinite capaciy for taking pains".
It should prove to be a real boon to those whose task it is to
lead at Plas - especially first timers - and, although it has
no doubt
been a labour of love, we owe a great debt to Stan for all the
trouble he has taken. I heartily commend it to you.
