What was (and is) "Plas"

For many thousands of people who holidayed at Plas-y-Nant over the last 60 years the simple expression "Plas" conjures up a complex and special feeling that is a magical mixture of location, facility and camaraderie.  On this page we try and capture the essence of "Plas".

From 1924 until 1985 Plas-y-Nant was owned and operated by Christian Endeavour Holiday Homes Ltd, a Christian charity providing low cost holidays to mainly young people from the Manchester and Lancashire areas.  Holidays were organised year-round, and generally featured

  • Accommodation in dormitory-style rooms for 100-120 people.  This meant that most rooms slept 6-8 people - a sort of enforced camaraderie !!
  • Activities organised by 2-3 “excursion leaders”, who usually led three excursions 4 days per week – the “A” party undertook an energetic hill or mountain walk, the “B” party undertook a gentle forest ramble, and the “C” party went sightseeing by coach, often to the seaside or a castle / town.
  • In the evenings entertainment was usually by the guests for the guests – concerts, games etc.  In line with Christian Endeavour ideals, alcohol was not allowed in the site.

For many years Plas-y-Nant was managed by Lena Coughlin, a dedicated single lady who managed staffing, catering and pastoral care for the young people in her care.

This basic formula - some relaxed but clear guidelines, a lot of organised communal activity and some benign oversight - created an experience that most guests valued and treasured.

Today, Plas-y-Nant is a small guest house, with 14 bedrooms, making it particularly suitable for parties and groups of up to 30-40 people.  Regular feedback from the many parties and groups who stay with us tells us that a lot of the magic of "Plas" is still there.  The beautiful surroundings, the large Lounge and Dining Room, the good food, the ready availability of silly games like Giant Jenga and the relaxed style of Tony and Diane Phillips all contribute ...... but we suspect it is in the air, the water and the fabric of the building !!
